When Lewis and his Greek wife Katerini return to the island of her birth for a visit, neither could have predicted the series of events that would unfold, resulting in both of them coming to wonder if they’ll ever see each other again.

Katerini, though, wonders if she’ll even live to see anyone at all.

"Can't Tell" is a story of consequences, revolving around a sensitive social issue that is perhaps surprisingly a problem even in small family-oriented communities in Greece. The story emphasises that most people have a conscience that will make them pay for wrongdoing, even if the law doesn't.

Sometimes though, both exact their just revenge on the perpetrators.

The setting for the story is primarily the fictional island of Spilos, which is based (for the purposes of description only) on Halki, a small island accessible primarily by boat from Rhodes. Some of the action takes place on Rhodes in the village of Lindos, whilst a very small percentage takes place also in the UK.

"This is up there with the best books I have read. It tackles a subject which was obviously difficult to address in small Greek communities. Highly recommended! "

"Can you enjoy reading a novel on a dark subject? Yes, if it is handled in the way John Manuel does in this gripping story where you begin to understand the background (without voyeuristic details), are compelled by the action, feel for the characters and wonder what the outcome will be. Of course it is in a Greek setting, which is always an attraction for me. Different to your usual genres, but up to your usual standards. Well done John."
